Tailored asphalt maintenance solutions for proving grounds
Proving grounds (test tracks) place stringent demands on asphalt performance and surface friction, particularly in high-speed and high-curvature sections. Colas Active Sealing preserves the friction of the existing pavement while protecting the asphalt against early deterioration.
Maintenance with our specialized sealing process is both time‑efficient and cost‑effective, as it does not require removal of the existing asphalt and can extend pavement service life by up to 35% when applied at the right time.
At the same time, Colas Active Sealing helps reduce CO2. Studies show that applying asphalt sealing twice instead of replacing the wearing course can reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 90%, making Colas Active Sealing a highly sustainable solution for pavement maintenance and asphalt preservation.
To meet the demanding conditions of test tracks and proving grounds, we have developed our own specialized application equipment, engineered for reliable performance on high‑curvature and high‑speed track sections. This ensures accurate application and consistent results, even under extreme operational conditions.
With a strong understanding of the strict requirements for operational reliability, safety and scheduling on proving grounds, our maintenance approach is designed to minimize downtime and operational disruptions.
Backed by many years of experience working at leading automotive test centers, including Mercedes‑Benz and BMW, we are a trusted and professional provider of asphalt and road maintenance solutions for high‑performance infrastructure.
Working process
Identification and planning
- Identification of asphalt pavement areas to be treated
- Incorporation of proving ground access, safety and operational requirements into production planning
Daily production meeting
- Daily coordination between Colas Sealing and the test center to confirm work areas, schedules and time windows.
- Review of weather conditions.
- Daily safety briefing prior to commencement of sealing activities.
Cleaning of the area
- High-pressure cleaning of the pavement if deemed necessary during inspection.
Application of Colas Active Sealing
- Colas Active Sealing is applied using our custom‑built distributor trucks, specifically designed for asphalt sealing on high‑speed and high‑curvature test tracks.
- The distribution unit covers widths of up to 6.7 meters, enabling efficient treatment of large asphalt areas.
- During application, the sealing mixture is continuously adjusted to match pavement condition, including: Viscosity, Rejuvenation (softening) effect, and the applied amount.
- Hand spraying is used for hard‑to‑reach areas or locations requiring additional sealing.
Drying time and application of crushed granite
- During curing, the sealing penetrates the asphalt surface while the water content evaporates.
- Drying time is weather‑dependent, typically ranging from 2 to 5 hours.
- After curing, specially graded crushed granite (0–2 mm) is applied to the treated area.
Reopening and handover
- Optional sweeping of excess crushed granite.
- Remarking of the treated area where required.
- Visual inspection to ensure quality and performance.
- Final handover to the test center, allowing rapid return to operation.
