Asphalt maintenance protects road investments
It is often financially advantageous to begin preventive asphalt maintenance when the asphalt pavement is between 8 and 15 years old.
We recommend Colas Active Sealing:
- When approximately 30% of the surface stones are visible
- When the asphalt pavement begins to lose mortar and aggregates and shows other signs of wear
- Before severe deterioration, such as cracks or potholes, develops.
Take at look at the video and see how we extended the life of asphalt pavements for our Irish colleagues.
Working method in six steps:
1
Repairs
- Before applying Colas Active Sealing or crack sealing, potholes must be repaired.
- Demarking, if necessary.
2
Cleaning and closing off the road
- Cleaning of the asphalt pavement if deemed necessary during inspections.
- Barriers/signage are set up to guide the road's users in the best possible way and at the same time ensure the safety of our employees.
3
Applying Colas Active Sealing
- Colas Active Sealing is applied with one of our custom-built distributor trucks designed specifically for this task. The width of the distribution unit can reach up to 6,7 meters. During the application, the sealing mixture is adjusted according to the condition of the asphalt pavement. It is the viscosity, the softening effect and the applied amount that are adjustable.
- With a hand sprayer we seal areas that are difficult for the distributor truck to reach or that require extra sealing.
4
Drying time and application of crushed granite
- During the drying time, the sealing penetrates the asphalt surface while the water evaporates.
- The drying time is weather-dependent and typically ranges from 2 to 5 hours.
- Once the drying time is over, crushed granite of 0-2 mm is applied to the treated area.
5
Reopening the area
- Visual assessment of the treated area.
- Removal of temporary traffic control measures.
- Final handover.
6
After 10 days
- Optional sweeping along the kerb line.
- Remarking.

Colas Active Sealing is a unique product that extends the service life of asphalt pavements. The sealant regenerates the flexibility and adhesive properties of the binder and is ideally suited for application on old surface dressings with commencing aggregate loss.
The advantages of sealing are:
- An individual product designed for each particular road and its state of degradation
- Attractive price and work efficient
- Significant ability to penetrate the asphalt
- Softens the existing bitumen and adds more bitumen
- Makes old bitumen flexible and strong again
- Stronger pavement without aggregate loss
- Rebuilds the asphalt mortar and retains the surface friction
- Less water penetrates the wearing course.
Colas Active Sealing adds up to 30-40% to the expected service life and subsequent follow-up treatment will result in further extension of the service life.
All types of asphalt – roads, motorways, airports, test centres etc. can benefit from sealing.
The most optimal time for sealing of the asphalt pavement is:
- When 30% of the stones in the top layer is visible
- When stone loss takes on
- Before the asphalt pavement is seriously damaged
- When your SMA is more than 2 years old
When sealing asphalt pavements, Colas Active Sealing follow a number of work procedures:
- We clean and seal minor cracks
- We carry out a test in order to estimate how the solution will penetrate the pavement and to determine the mix proportion
- When we spray, the solution instantly penetrates the asphalt
- Areas with extra need, are sprayed by hand
- Areas that need extra are hand sprayed
- We protect areas that are not supposed to be sealed.
